Abstract: Medieval twelfth-century chronicles offer vivid accounts of the lives of medieval elite people, but for those medievalists interested in women they can also be disappointingly vague or highly stereotypical. In analyzing passages from three different chronicles in which Matilda of Saxony (d. 1189), Joanna of Sicily (d. 1199), and Therese-Matilda of Portugal (d. 1218) occur I want to explore how and why these women were portrayed in specific ways. I will also show that we can come to a richer understanding of medieval women’s lives if we include material culture which sometimes questions or contradicts the written record.
