    E. Thomas Lawson (Professor Emeritus in the Department of Comparative Religion at Western Michigan University)

     

    Abstract
    There are at least six approaches to the human mind (the neuroscientific, the behavioral, the competence approach, the ecological, the phenomenological, and the computational). All have made contributions to an explanatory understanding to the mind. This talk will focus on the competence approach to that study and attempt to show why talk of inference systems makes eminent sense especially in the light of the development of the human brain in evolutionary time.
